Copiague F.D. Signal 13 Oak St. 2/14/23
The Copiague Fire Department was alerted for a reported house fire on Oak Street about 20:55 on February 14, 2023. First Assistant Chief Broyles arrived first and transmitted a working fire and had fire showing from the exposure 2 side of a one and half story home that had already extended to the exposure 4 side of a two and a half story home next to it. Chief of Department Miller, Second Assistant Chief McInerney and Third Assistant Chief Orlando arrived shortly after with Chief Miller taking command of the scene. Engine 1-3-7 was first due and had a hydrant just passed the house, that crew and the crew from second due Engine 1-3-10 stretched and operated two lines. One line was used to knock down the fire on the exposure, and the other was brought into the original fire building. A third line was stretched from 1-3-10 who also picked up a hydrant on their way in. Ladder 1-3-4 and Lindenhurst Ladder 1-6-4 set up in front of the house and those crews laddered, vented and searched the home with all searches being negative. The occupants and two pets had exited the house prior to the fire departments arrival. The neighboring house was also searched and those searches were negative. The fire was contained to the exterior of the exposure house. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control with one resident of the original house suffering burns to the hands, that person was taken to a local hospital. Four adults, one child and two rabbits were dispalced by the fire and were being assisted by the Red Cross. Mutual aid to the scene was provided by the Lindenhurst Fire Department for a working Truck, the North Lindenhurst Fire Department for an Engine, the Amityville Fire Department for RIT and the North Amityville Fire Company for an Ambulance. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Town of Babylon Fire Marshal and Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.
