The North Babylon Fire Company was alerted for an MVA with reported overturn and entrapment on the eastbound Sunrise Highway on the overpass to Hubbard's Path about 20:45 on February 19. 2023. Assistant Chiefs Alt, Elco and DeAngelis responded first. Upon the arrival of Alt, he found a Chevrolet Colorado facing the wrong way on top of the guardrail and against a tree and hanging over the service road. Engines 1-8-3, 1-8-4, Ladder 1-8-6 and Ambulances 1-8-7 and 1-8-14 responded. Chief Alt requested two additional Heavy Rescues and Ambulance to the scene from the West Babylon and Babylon Fire Departments for stabilization equipment. The crew from 1-8-6 used struts and chains to secure the vehicle to the guardrail, Suffolk County Police Emergency Services also responded and used their vehicle for additional stabilization and secured a chain from their truck to pick up truck. Once the vehicle was secured, it was realized the two occupants were not trapped, the passenger doors were opened and the couple was removed to waiting North Babylon Ambulances. The second vehicle involved was a Mercury Mountaineer. The driver of that vehicle had struck the Chevrolet from behind causing it to roll over multiple times before it landed where it did. The Mercury also struck the guardrail and then proceeded further down the highway where it struck the venter divider and came to a stop. The driver of that vehicle was transported by the West Babylon Ambulance, all three were taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Mercury was later charged with DWI.
