Wantagh F.D. Signal 10 Holmes St. 4/9/23
The Wantagh Fire Department took numerous calls reporting smoke from house at Holmes Street and Seamans Neck Road about 14:20 on April 9, 2023. Assistant Chiefs Mathewson and Stevens were on way along with Safety Officer 6920, Chief Mathewson had the alarm upgraded to a general alarm. Safety Officer 6920 arrived first and reported fire showing from the front of the house. A working fire was transmitted and requests for mutual aid started. Chief Mathewson took command when he arrived and reported there was heavy fire showing from the exposure one, three and four sides of a one story home. Engine 692 was first due and had a hydrant in front of the house. The crew from 692 stretched the first line to the house, upon the arrival of Engine 694, they crew stretched a second line. Ladder 6912 arrived and set up on the 1-2 corner, Ladder 6911 arrived and set up on Seamans Neck Road. As the crews were advancing the lines in the house, an explosion occurred in the garage and the order to evacuate the house was given. With all members pulled from the house, 6911 and Bethpage Ladder 3 put their master streams into operation along with three handlines to knock down the fire they had engulfed the entire house. It took over an hour to bring the fire under control with two firefighters being injured. All searches of the home were negative. Mutual aid to the scene was provided by the Bethpage, Levittown, North Bellmore, East Meadow, Seaford and Massapequa Fire Departments. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
